Road to Redemption: John 15:1-17

Mar 30, 2025    Pastor Chris Sherwood

In this powerful exploration of John 15, we delve into the profound metaphor of Jesus as the true vine and God as the gardener. This imagery beautifully illustrates our relationship with Christ and the importance of remaining connected to Him. The central message revolves around the concept of 'abiding' or 'remaining' in Jesus, emphasizing that our spiritual fruitfulness depends entirely on our connection to Him. We're reminded that apart from Christ, we can do nothing of eternal value. The passage also highlights God's role in pruning us for greater fruitfulness, a process that might be painful but is ultimately for our growth. As we reflect on this, we're challenged to examine our own lives: Are we truly abiding in Christ? Are we allowing God to prune away what's unproductive in our lives? This message encourages us to deepen our faith, to love one another as Christ loved us, and to trust in the process of spiritual growth, even when it's uncomfortable.

Here's a 5-day Bible reading plan and devotional guide based on the themes from the sermon:

Day 1: Abiding in the True Vine Reading: John 15:1-8

Devotional: Jesus presents Himself as the true vine, with us as the branches. This powerful metaphor illustrates our need for constant connection to Christ. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own, we cannot produce spiritual fruit apart from Jesus. Today, reflect on your connection to Christ. Are you abiding in Him daily through prayer, Scripture reading, and obedience? Consider areas where you may have become disconnected and ask the Holy Spirit to help you reconnect and remain firmly attached to the vine. Remember, it's not about striving in your own strength, but allowing Christ's life-giving power to flow through you.

Day 2: Pruning for Greater Fruitfulness Reading: John 15:1-2, Hebrews 12:5-11

Devotional: The Father, as the gardener, prunes the branches to increase their fruitfulness. While pruning can be painful, it's a necessary process for growth and greater productivity. What areas of your life might God be pruning right now? Are there habits, relationships, or pursuits that are hindering your spiritual growth? Instead of resisting God's pruning work, embrace it with trust and patience. Remember that the temporary discomfort leads to lasting spiritual growth and a more abundant life in Christ. Ask God for the strength to endure His loving discipline and the wisdom to cooperate with His transformative work in your life.

Day 3: Loving Obedience Reading: John 14:15-24

Devotional: Jesus repeatedly emphasizes the connection between love and obedience. Our obedience is not meant to be grudging compliance, but a natural outflow of our love for Christ. Reflect on your attitude towards God's commands. Do you view them as burdensome rules or as loving guidance from a perfect Father? Ask the Holy Spirit to deepen your love for Jesus, knowing that as your love grows, so will your desire to obey. Consider one area where you struggle to obey and pray for God to align your heart with His will. Remember, obedience to God always leads to our ultimate good and His glory.

Day 4: Bearing Fruit Through Prayer Reading: John 15:7-8, 16

Devotional: Jesus promises that if we remain in Him and His words remain in us, we can ask for anything in His name and it will be done. This isn't a blank check for our personal desires, but an invitation to participate in God's kingdom work through prayer. As we abide in Christ, our desires align with His, and we begin to pray according to His will. Today, spend time in prayer, asking God to reveal His heart to you. What burdens has He placed on your heart? What Kingdom fruit does He want to produce through your prayers? Trust that as you pray in alignment with God's will, He will work powerfully through you to bear lasting fruit.

Day 5: Love One Another Reading: John 15:9-17

Devotional: Jesus commands us to love one another as He has loved us – sacrificially and unconditionally. This love is not just a feeling, but an action that often requires great sacrifice. Reflect on how Jesus has loved you. How can you extend that same love to others, even those who are difficult to love? Ask God to fill you with His love and to give you opportunities to demonstrate it today. Remember that as we love others, we make the invisible God visible to a watching world. Your act of love, no matter how small, can be a powerful testimony of God's transforming grace in your life.
