Pastor John opens with what sounds like a completely absurd, next-to-impossible statement: There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Zero. None. Ever.

While many Christians take this familiar verse for granted, the reality is mind-blowing. Condemnation means being pronounced guilty and marked for total destruction—a sentence we fully deserved. But through Jesus, God pulled off the ultimate exchange: Christ voluntarily took our sin, guilt, and judgment onto Himself, and in return, handed us His absolute perfection, righteousness, and eternal life. We gave away everything bad and got back everything good.

Because we’ve been co-crucified with Christ, the heavenly court no longer sees our messy pasts; it only sees the sinless life of Jesus. The Old Testament law could point out our depravity, but it could never fix our hearts—only the Holy Spirit can do that. Now, we are called to stop rationalizing the amoral cravings of the flesh and instead set our minds on the Spirit. Living by the Spirit frees us from selfish, me-first thinking and opens our eyes to see earthly "previews of heaven"—whether that’s serving side-by- side at youth camp or celebrating in unified worship. When we truly grasp that our death sentence was permanently cancelled, we are completely liberated from fear, free to boldly glorify God, and empowered to enjoy Him forever!
